Bangladesh asks India to remove trade restrictions

Bangladesh has asked India to remove restrictions on exports through land ports, withdraw anti-dumping duties on jute products, and preserve tariff preferences after its graduation from least developed country status.

A 10-member delegation led by commerce ministry additional secretary Ayesha Akhter raised the requests at bilateral trade talks that began Oct. 8 in New Delhi, New Delhi Television (NDTV) reported.

India has not decided on Bangladesh’s requests. Indian officials sought the reopening of border markets and customs facilities and proposed easing restrictions on cotton yarn and other exports to Bangladesh.

India restricted Bangladeshi garment imports to two seaports in May 2025 and later limited jute entry to Mumbai’s Nhava Sheva port.

The talks also covered rail connections, trade-route efficiency, and barriers affecting exports from India’s northeastern states.
