Bangladesh’s first grid-connected solar power plant has supplied about 63.7 million units of electricity since opening in Kaptai in 2019, according to officials cited by Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS).
The 7.4-megawatt facility occupies 19 acres of previously unused land beside Kaptai Dam. Officials said low staffing and operating costs have supported its economic viability, while maintenance largely involves cleaning solar panels.
Authorities are working to add 1 megawatt to the existing plant. A tendering process has also been completed for a separate 7.6-megawatt solar facility in Kaptai’s brickfield area. The added output remains contingent on implementation and commissioning.
The project demonstrates how unused, non-arable land can contribute clean electricity without directly burning oil, gas, or coal. Officials said similar projects could diversify Bangladesh’s energy mix and reduce pressure from fuel imports.
