Bangladesh’s government has decided in principle to relocate its Secretariat to the former trade fair grounds in Agargaon, but the proposal still requires cabinet approval.
Housing and public works minister Zakaria Taher said the preliminary decision was made at a meeting chaired by the prime minister last Wednesday.
“Various aspects of this matter have been under consideration for a long time,” Taher said. “For now, a decision in principle has been made, but the final decision will be taken by the cabinet.”
A Public Works Ministry official said the Department of Architecture presented three designs for the proposed government complex, and meeting participants reached a preliminary decision on one.
Planning Commission and Public Works Ministry officials have begun preparatory work. Previous governments considered moving the Secretariat to Agargaon several times, but those proposals were not implemented.
