Bangladesh’s Osmani Udyan to reopen Oct. 19 after decade-long closure

Bangladesh’s Osmani Udyan is scheduled to reopen to the public Oct. 19 after a decade, state minister for local government, rural development, and cooperatives Mir Shahe Alam announced Sunday.

Prime minister Tarique Rahman is expected to inaugurate the renovated Dhaka park and a newly constructed July Memorial, The Business Standard reported.

The Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) renovated the park at a cost of Tk 50 crore (approximately $4.06 million).

Alam said the park would offer walking paths, restaurants, a library, children’s play areas, artificial fountains, and water features. The memorial honors people killed and others who participated in the July uprising.

The announcement came during a preparatory meeting at the Bangladesh Secretariat. Alam said the DSCC was continuing work to improve the park’s appearance and environment ahead of its scheduled reopening.
