Bangladesh government vows to implement July Charter with dissenting notes

Home minister Salahuddin Ahmed said Sunday that the government will implement the July National Charter as signed, including dissenting notes submitted by political parties.

Speaking after a meeting of the parliamentary special committee on constitutional amendments, Salahuddin said the panel is consulting parties and other stakeholders before submitting its recommendations to parliament.

He said parties had asked the committee to finish discussions quickly so a report could be submitted and the proposed changes advanced as the 18th constitutional amendment.

Salahuddin also rejected claims that the ruling Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) was reluctant to implement the charter because of its parliamentary majority.

“We will implement the July National Charter to the letter, exactly as it was signed,” he said, adding that the government would seek to introduce the constitutional amendment bill as soon as possible.
