Bangladesh forms 7-member panel to pursue taxes from frozen overseas accounts

Bangladesh’s government has formed a seven-member inter-ministerial committee to determine how taxes and duties can be recovered from overseas bank accounts frozen by court orders in cases involving assets allegedly siphoned out of the country.

The Financial Institutions Division said in a gazette notification that the committee will be led by the attorney general and include representatives from the Anti-Corruption Commission, Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit, National Board of Revenue, Criminal Investigation Department, and Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate.

The panel will review existing laws, identify procedures for recovering state dues, and recommend ways to resolve legal and administrative obstacles. It will also coordinate agencies involved in tracing transactions, investigating assets, and managing funds frozen under court directives.

The committee will submit recommendations to appropriate authorities to strengthen asset recovery and protect government revenue.
