A lawyer petitioned Bangladesh’s High Court on Sunday seeking a ban on films and dramas centered on love and romance, arguing that such content harms youths and society.
Advocate Md Mahmudul Hasan Mamun filed the writ petition Sept. 13, naming senior government officials and Bangladesh Film Certification Board chairman as respondents.
Mamun said excessive romantic content contributes to moral degradation, social disorder, and distraction from studies and careers. He also alleged that some productions normalize or glamorize extramarital affairs, adultery, and rape.
Petition cites Article 39 of Bangladesh’s Constitution, arguing that freedom of speech and expression may be subject to reasonable restrictions for decency and morality.
It also seeks mandatory production and broadcast of content on science, education, history, Liberation War, and national defense. Mamun said he filed case after an Aug. 27 legal notice drew no effective response.
