Bangladesh prime minister orders faster action to curb river pollution

Bangladesh prime minister Tarique Rahman on Sunday directed authorities to accelerate efforts to curb river pollution, remove waste, restore navigability, and improve waterways around Dhaka.

Speaking at a review meeting at Bangladesh Secretariat, Rahman said citizens must also take responsibility for protecting the environment.

“Alongside ourselves, we must strive to leave pollution-free rivers and a liveable environment for the next generation. We cannot simply wait for government directives; we must also act out of our own sense of responsibility,” Rahman said.

The meeting reviewed measures involving the Buriganga, Turag, Dhaleshwari, Balu, and Shitalakkhya rivers, as well as nearby canals and drains. Officials discussed maintaining normal water flow and improving Dhaka’s circular waterways.

Rahman called for swift implementation of existing plans and stronger coordination among ministries, divisions, and agencies responsible for pollution control, river conservation, and waterway management.
