History of the Bangladesh Television (BTV) logo

Bangladesh Television’s historic logo, now at the center of a debate over a possible redesign, traces its origins to the years after Bangladesh gained independence in 1971.

Former Bangladesh Television (BTV) deputy director general Kha Ma Harun said a committee including artists Zainul Abedin, Quamrul Hassan, and then art direction chief Imdad Hossain finalized the design.

The logo depicts a television screen within a green frame and a rising red sun, drawing on the colors of Bangladesh’s national flag. Harun said artist Mustafa Monwar created the calligraphic “Bangladesh Television” lettering in his own handwriting.

The logo received its first color and modern form in 1980, when BTV began color broadcasting under Monwar’s leadership. It was later adapted for digital broadcasting while retaining its basic design.

BTV director general Kazi Jesin said no final decision has been made on replacing the logo.
