Bangladesh anti-corruption agency summons former army chief Shafiuddin Ahmed over illicit wealth allegations

Bangladesh’s Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has summoned former army chief Sheikh Mohammad Shafiuddin Ahmed for questioning over allegations that he acquired illicit wealth through irregularities and corruption.

Shafiuddin was asked to appear at ACC headquarters at 12:30 p.m. on Sept. 14 with a photocopy of his national identity card, spokesperson Akhtarul Islam confirmed Sunday.

Commission began investigating allegations on Dec. 14, 2025, and formed a two-member team led by director Abul Hasnat, with deputy director Mozammil Hossain.

Notice says recording Shafiuddin’s statement is “essential in the interest of a proper investigation.”

A senior ACC official said team will submit a report after investigation. Commission may file a case if evidence supports allegations or close inquiry if they are not substantiated.

Shafiuddin served as Bangladesh Army chief from June 24, 2021, to June 23, 2024.
