Bangladesh vows to leave enforced disappearances behind. Government promises justice for past abuses.

Liberation War Affairs Minister Ahmed Azam Khan said Saturday that the government is working to build a Bangladesh free from enforced disappearances, killings, oppression, and torture.

Speaking after visiting the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Centre ahead of the International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances, Khan said the government wanted to build a democratic and prosperous country under Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.

State minister for liberation war affairs Ishraque Hossain said the government wanted to send a clear message that enforced disappearances would not return and pledged justice for past abuses.

Hossain also said people accused in connection with the deaths of about 2,000 students and members of the public during the 2024 uprising would face trial before the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT).

A government-organized rally marking the international observance is scheduled Sunday in Dhaka.
