Bangladesh weighs $2.2 billion plan for 20 Chinese J-10 fighter jets

Bangladesh is moving to purchase Chinese J-10CE fighter jets, attack helicopters, and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) systems as part of an air force modernization effort, a senior government adviser said Tuesday.

Prime minister’s policy and strategy adviser Zahed Ur Rahman said a committee had negotiated the purchases and prepared a draft agreement. He said the deal could be completed this year if funding is available, or next year if necessary.

Zahed did not disclose the number of aircraft or total cost. However, a Chief Adviser’s Office document dated April 5, 2025, seen by The Daily Star showed the interim government had agreed in principle to buy 20 Chengdu J-10s for $2.2 billion.

Retired Maj. Gen. ANM Muniruzzaman called the aircraft technologically advanced and price competitive, but warned that geopolitical considerations and Bangladesh’s trade agreement with the United States should be closely examined.
