Bangladesh NCP accuses BNP government of failing key promises in first 180 days

Bangladesh’s National Citizen Party (NCP) on Monday accused the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) government of failing to deliver on key promises during its first 180 days, citing problems in the economy, energy, law and order, healthcare, and state institutions.

At a news conference, NCP convener Nahid Islam criticized fuel and gas shortages, load shedding, higher electricity prices, and the government’s response to dengue. He also accused the government of blaming the previous interim administration for current challenges.

“The government has failed to establish law and order across the country,” Nahid said.

NCP’s report said farmers are paying Tk350-450 more per bag of fertilizer, approximately $2.85-$3.66, because of shortages and distribution irregularities. It also cited 88,217 cases filed from March through July, including 1,539 murder cases, and alleged 830 political violence incidents left 56 dead and more than 5,000 injured.

Prime minister Tarique Rahman’s government has continued to struggle in governing the country of nearly 180 million people.
