Bangladesh’s Mongla economic zone could create 60,000 jobs. First phase is set to begin in October.

Mongla Economic Zone is expected to create about 60,000 jobs in two phases, with first-phase work scheduled to begin in October, shipping minister Sheikh Rabiul Alam said Sunday.

Speaking at a reception organized by Mongla Municipal Bangladesh Nationalist Party at Mongla Bus Stand, Alam said the first phase would create around 25,000 jobs, with employment rising to about 60,000 after the second phase begins.

He said uninterrupted power and energy supplies would be essential for industrial development in Mongla. Officials are discussing the possibility of supplying gas through a 23-kilometer pipeline from an area near Akram Point, he said.

Alam also said construction of the Bangladesh-China Friendship Bridge over the Mongla River was progressing.

He said coordinated development of the bridge, economic zone, Mongla Port, and energy infrastructure could transform Mongla and the wider southwestern region.
