Prime minister Tarique Rahman said Sunday his government is pursuing people-focused policies to turn Bangladesh into a welfare state, while urging citizens to resist efforts to create street disorder.
Speaking at a public gathering in Pakundia, Kishoreganj, Rahman cited programs including Family Card and said his administration’s priorities include peace, rule of law, jobs, education and health care.
“Our goal is to build a welfare state. That is why we are taking various measures for the welfare of the people,” Rahman said.
He also blamed the previous administration’s “unplanned measures” for continuing problems in the power and energy sector. Rahman said the government plans to present a 10-year strategy to address those challenges during the parliamentary session beginning Aug. 27.
“A small number of people are trying to create disorder on the streets,” Rahman said, warning that disruptions hurt ordinary people, businesses and livelihoods.
