Bangladesh filling station official refused to surrender cash. Assailants hacked him and fled with nearly $98,130.

Armed assailants intercepted a cash-carrying vehicle Sunday morning in Dhaka’s airport area, hacked a filling station official and robbed Tk 1,21,25,000 (approximately $98,130), according to a case filed with police.

Mohammad Al Amin, 49, assistant manager of DL Filling Station in Uttara, was headed to a Pubali Bank branch when six to seven men on three motorcycles stopped the van near Crowne Plaza on the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway.

When Al Amin refused to hand over the cash bag, one assailant allegedly pointed a pistol at his chest while another attacked him with a machete, injuring his left elbow, palm and leg.

Manager Md Abdul Karim said, “We deposit money five days a week. We don’t suspect any of our employees.”

Police, the Rapid Action Battalion and the Detective Branch are investigating. Police said closed-circuit television footage was collected and drives were underway to identify and arrest those involved.
