India persecution tracker records 44 Muslim deaths in first seven months of 2026

Twenty-five Muslims were killed in India from May through July, including 15 allegedly killed by police and security personnel, according to the South Asia Justice Campaign’s India Persecution Tracker.

The report said 10 others were killed by Hindu extremist actors in religiously motivated attacks across five states. It recorded 44 Muslim deaths during the first seven months of 2026, including 19 attributed to state actors and 25 to Hindutva assailants.

The tracker also said more than 1,000 Muslim homes, businesses and religious structures were demolished during at least 21 episodes across eight states. It alleged authorities forced some families across the border into Bangladesh at night.

United Nations special rapporteurs cited in the report warned that rhetoric about alleged “infiltrators” risked conflating Indian Muslim citizens with foreign nationals and could amount to incitement to discrimination under international law.
