Bangladesh prime minister blames beneficiaries of past rule for energy sector instability

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman said beneficiaries of what he described as “fascism” were trying to destabilize Bangladesh’s power and energy sector by spreading misinformation.

“Those who have benefited from fascism are not sitting idle,” Rahman said at a rally marking the 37th anniversary of the Doctors Association of Bangladesh.

Rahman said unplanned projects and decisions by previous governments had left the energy sector fragile and contributed to current electricity, gas and fuel shortages. He said the government was preparing plans to gradually ease the crises.

Rahman also said the government had decided to recruit 100,000 health workers to promote primary health care awareness.

Doctors proposed recruiting 5,000 physicians through a special Bangladesh Civil Service examination, raising entry and retirement ages and expanding incentives for doctors serving remote areas. Rahman said the proposals would be considered in phases.
