At least 30 injured as rival groups clash in Bangladesh village

At least 30 people were injured Saturday when supporters of two rival groups clashed in a village in eastern Bangladesh, police said.

The violence erupted in Tiara village in Brahmanbaria’s Nabinagar upazila and continued intermittently from about 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., according to police and local residents.

Police said supporters of Shishu Mia and Abul Hossain Mia have been involved in a longstanding dispute over local dominance and other issues.

The latest confrontation followed an incident Friday in which three Abul Hossain supporters were allegedly stopped and beaten by Shishu Mia supporters.

Both sides used locally made weapons, and several houses were allegedly attacked, vandalized and looted.

“Additional police have been deployed in the village to prevent any further clashes,” additional superintendent of police MM Rakib Ur Raja said.
