Jamalpur Commuter derailment disrupts Dhaka-Mymensingh rail link

Four compartments of the Jamalpur Commuter train, including its power car, derailed, disrupting train service on the Dhaka-Mymensingh rail link, railway officials said.

A railway official said the Teesta and Mohua trains remained stranded, while other trains were operating through an alternative route via Gouripur, Kishoreganj and Bhairab.

“We have dispatched a relief train from here, which has reached near the spot,” the official said. “Rescue work will start very soon and they will try to finish the work as quickly as possible.”

The derailment renewed calls from commuters for the single-track line to be doubled. One passenger said trains sometimes wait at least half an hour for crossings.

Another railway representative said the government plans to replace steel sleepers and aging tracks, add ballast and install new fittings to improve safety and train speeds.
