Windows were smashed and petrol bombs were thrown at former Bangladesh cricket captain Shakib Al Hasan’s ancestral home in Magura after he joined ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s first public media event since her 2024 removal from power.
Police said the attack Wednesday caused a fire on the upper floor of the unoccupied residence. No injuries were reported.
Hours earlier, Shakib, a former Awami League lawmaker, joined a virtual event organized by the Foreign Correspondents Club of South Asia in New Delhi. Hasina said she would return to Bangladesh despite facing a death sentence handed down in absentia in November 2025.
“I will return to my people,” Hasina said.
Hasina also called for the ban on the Awami League to be lifted. Bangladesh’s foreign ministry condemned her media appearance, saying it could harm relations with India.
