Eight injured in Bangladesh student clash at Tolaram College

At least eight people were injured Wednesday in a clash between rival student groups at Government Tolaram College in Narayanganj, police and organizers said.

The violence erupted after activists from Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir were allegedly prevented from speaking at a campus program marking the July Uprising. An argument escalated into a chase and counter-chase, with participants using iron rods, sticks and bricks.

Police arrived at the campus and brought the situation under control.

Additional superintendent of police Hasinuzzaman said legal action would be taken after officers reviewed closed-circuit television footage.

Both groups blamed each other. Shibir activists accused Bangladesh Jatiotabadi Chhatra Dal members of launching a sudden attack during the program. Chhatra Dal activists said Shibir members attacked them without provocation after the event ended, injuring several of their members.
