Bangladesh tribunal targets year-end completion of July uprising cases

Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal aims to complete investigations and trials tied to the 2024 July mass uprising by the end of this year, chief prosecutor Md Aminul Islam said Tuesday.

Speaking before the second anniversary of the fall of the Awami League government, Aminul said prosecutors had received 12 investigation reports and would soon file formal charges. Verdicts in three cases are expected soon.

Prosecutors have screened 109 complaints from 509 allegations of crimes against humanity linked to the uprising and other incidents under the previous government. The complaints cover alleged crimes in more than 50 districts.

Aminul said complaints from the same locality would be combined into single cases to avoid repeating evidence and accelerate proceedings.

“Our goal is to ensure faster and more effective trials while placing all relevant facts before the tribunal,” he said.
