United States special envoy Sergio Gore traveled from Dhaka to Cox’s Bazar to inspect Rohingya refugee camps after holding talks with Bangladeshi officials that included discussions on trade agreements.

Bangladesh’s foreign minister described the trade discussions during a public briefing as a positive development. Former Bangladesh ambassador Mahfuzur Rahman said additional issues may have been raised privately and could become public later.

“Some issues might have come up in the discussions which we do not know at this moment,” Rahman said. “They might be disclosed later.”

Rahman said Bangladesh should expand its capacity, maintain dialogue and remain engaged with the United States to gain lasting benefits from the visit.

He said United States assistance would be important across several sectors, particularly trade, as Bangladesh moves from least developed country status toward developing-nation status.
