Bangladesh government bank borrowing reaches record $10.59 billion

Bangladesh government borrowing from banks rose to a record 1,30,875 crore taka (approximately $10.59 billion) during the July-to-May reporting period, according to a Bangladesh Bank report.

The total equaled 104% of the government’s budget target and exceeded 1.30 lakh crore taka (approximately $10.52 billion). The report’s exact fiscal year was unclear because the Channel 24 transcript cited both 2024-25 and 2025-26.

Net borrowing from outside the banking sector fell to 284 crore taka (approximately $23 million), compared with 37,899 crore taka (approximately $3.07 billion) a year earlier.

Net borrowing through national savings certificates totaled 805 crore taka (approximately $65 million). In the previous year, the government instead repaid 5,893 crore taka (approximately $477 million) in that sector.
