Modi names Nandan Nilekani to lead India exam reform task force

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced Sunday that technology expert Nandan Nilekani will lead a high-powered task force charged with recommending reforms to the country’s examination system.

The announcement came a day after education minister Dharmendra Pradhan resigned following weeks of youth-led protests over alleged examination paper leaks and broader testing irregularities.

“Our examination system must be trustworthy. Our examination system must be transparent,” Modi said in a public video. He added that examinations must make “maximum use of technology.”

Modi said people accused of jeopardizing students’ futures were in jail and that fast-track courts had been established. He also said the government was moving to introduce legislation in Parliament containing strict provisions.

Modi said the government would act as quickly as possible on the Nilekani-led task force’s recommendations to strengthen the reliability of future examinations.

Nilekani is a co-founder of technology company Infosys.
