Bangladesh party chief urges arrest of former president Mohammed Shahabuddin

National Citizens Party convener Nahid Islam urged authorities Friday to prevent former president Mohammed Shahabuddin from leaving Bangladesh and called for his immediate arrest.

Speaking at the party’s “July March” program in Netrokona, Nahid said supporters should remain vigilant against any attempt by Shahabuddin to travel abroad by citing illness or another reason.

“The government must immediately arrest the corrupt former president,” Nahid said.

He accused Shahabuddin of being associated with the former government and alleged that the Bangladesh Nationalist Party had forced his resignation as part of a political plan.

Nahid also highlighted development problems in the haor region after visiting several areas. He said transportation infrastructure remained poor, academic activities had not begun at Netrokona Medical College and the district’s university was not operating.

“The haor is a national asset,” Nahid said, calling for a special development plan and dedicated funding for residents.
