Mohammed Shahabuddin resigned as president of Bangladesh on Friday, citing worsening health problems that he said left him unable to perform the duties of the office.
Representatives delivered his resignation letter to speaker of parliament Hafiz Uddin Ahmad.
Shahabuddin, who took office as Bangladesh’s 22nd president on April 24, 2023, said he had served with “honesty, integrity, and full allegiance to the constitution.”
He also defended his actions after the student-led uprising toppled the government in August 2024. Shahabuddin said he sought guidance from the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court under Article 106 before forming an interim government, helping avert a constitutional vacuum.
He said he suffers from heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, kidney complications and autonomic neuropathy, which can cause him to lose consciousness.
Shahabuddin said he resigned under Article 50(3) of the constitution and requires long-term treatment.
