Cockroach Janta Party founder Abhijeet Dipke said protesters would continue their demonstrations until India’s education minister, Dharmendra Pradhan, resigns over the government’s handling of student grievances.
Dipke said hundreds of students had suffered head injuries and pointed to activist Sonam Wangchuk’s 26-day hunger strike as evidence of the sacrifices made during the movement.
“After this, we will not accept anything less than a resignation,” Dipke said on Friday. “We will only leave from here after getting the resignation.”
Protesters then chanted, “Dharmendra Pradhan, resign,” and warned that demonstrations would be held every day unless he stepped down.
Wangchuk ended his hunger strike Thursday after the government provided assurances concerning students participating in peaceful protests. Dipke welcomed the end of the fast but said the broader campaign for accountability would continue.
