Heavy rain and upstream runoff triggered flash floods across northern and eastern Bangladesh, inundating villages, damaging roads and isolating residents, officials and local people said.
Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre said low-lying areas in 10 districts could face flash or short-duration flooding within one to three days. Surma, Kushiyara and Someswari rivers were above danger levels in Sunamganj, Sylhet and Netrokona on Sunday morning.
At least 40 villages were flooded in Netrokona, where roads were submerged and fish washed from ponds. In Sherpur, a Bailey bridge collapsed, disrupting travel.
In Noakhali’s Hatia island area, about 100,000 residents were stranded, a 24-kilometer embankment was damaged and nearly 25,000 hectares of crops and seedbeds were submerged. Rising rivers also flooded parts of Sylhet and Sunamganj, while erosion damaged homes, farmland and a regional highway in Tangail. Heavy rain was forecast across seven divisions for the next 48 hours.
