Bangladesh is considering a barbed-wire fence along its border with Myanmar as fighting and insurgent activity across the frontier raise security concerns, home minister Salahuddin Ahmed said.
Ahmed said no final decision had been made, but a proposal was under review. He cited clashes involving Myanmar’s military, Arakan Army and other armed groups, including Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army, saying instability had fueled drug smuggling, cross-border gunfire and deaths among Bangladeshi citizens.
He also said Border Guard Bangladesh, aided by local residents, had blocked attempts to force people across the border illegally.
“Not a single person has been allowed to enter Bangladesh through an illegal push-in,” Ahmed said.
On reported push-in attempts from India, Ahmed said Bangladesh would seek formal lists through foreign ministry channels, verify nationality and return confirmed Bangladeshi citizens only through legal procedures.
