Milestone School and College has resumed construction of a seven-story building in an aircraft approach path despite recommendations issued after a fighter jet crash killed 36 people, including 28 children.
The aircraft struck the school’s unauthorized two-story Haider Ali building. Investigators recommended barring new schools, hospitals and other public gathering sites from approach paths, gradually relocating institutions and moving Bangladesh Air Force training outside Dhaka.
School officials said the project received approval in 2022 and that they had received no direct order stopping construction.
“It’s an irrelevant question whether there will be a building or not because it’s entirely a CAAB [Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh] approved area, a residential area,” a Milestone representative said.
Officials from the capital development authority said their role is limited to regulating building height, not use. Aviation experts said new school construction is inappropriate and urged authorities to release the investigation report.
