Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has begun his first official overseas visit since taking office, choosing Malaysia as the destination for a diplomatic mission focused on economic growth, labor migration and regional ties.
Rahman left Bangladesh with a 23-member delegation for a visit that goes beyond a courtesy call. The trip is expected to draw close attention from the region’s diplomatic community as Dhaka seeks to deepen cooperation with Kuala Lumpur.
A central issue on the agenda is the Bangladeshi expatriate workforce in Malaysia. For thousands of Bangladeshis seeking work there, the visit has raised hopes after a prolonged period of visa complications and uncertainty.
One of the main objectives is to establish a labor market free of syndicates, allowing workers to migrate at lower costs. Members of the expatriate community also expect the two governments to discuss legal status for undocumented Bangladeshi workers and improved protections, working conditions and rights.
Beyond labor issues, the visit is aimed at turning a long-standing friendship into a stronger economic partnership. Talks are expected to focus on increasing Malaysian investment in Bangladesh, expanding educational exchanges and opening new opportunities for Bangladeshi manufactured goods in the Malaysian market.
By addressing labor, investment and trade, Rahman’s visit could help shape the next phase of Bangladesh-Malaysia relations and expand cooperation between the two countries.
