A Dhaka hospital was fined Tk 300,000, about $2,500, on Sunday as government investigators examined possible negligence and irregularities after six newborns died there within hours on May 27.
The babies, ages 1 to 3 days, died at Ad-Din Medical College Hospital in Moghbazar after their conditions suddenly deteriorated in a post-operative room.
Dhaka South City Corporation executive magistrate Mohammad Aminul Islam fined the hospital under food safety and consumer protection laws after inspectors found unhygienic food storage and refrigerators without temperature-control systems.
A Directorate General of Health Services probe committee found indications of negligence and said the post-operative room was “suffocating” and unsuitable for care. The committee is expected to submit its report June 3.
Hospital officials said they found no evidence supporting their initial suspicion of sabotage.
