Health officials investigating the deaths of six newborns at Ad-din Hospital have discovered an unauthorized bread and biscuit factory operating directly above the ward where the infants died, raising fresh concerns about safety conditions at the facility.
The bakery was found during an inspection by the health minister and senior government officials. It was located above Post-Operative Ward-2, where the six newborns died.
Investigators are examining whether a gas leak from an air-conditioning unit in the poorly ventilated ward contributed to the deaths. Officials said they are investigating whether the leak may have produced carbon monoxide, causing dangerously low oxygen levels.
No official cause of death has been determined.
Inspectors also reported unsanitary conditions around the bakery, including accumulated garbage and stagnant wastewater.
The hospital has faced criticism for restricting access to journalists and investigators. Officials also found the ward locked during the inspection.
Authorities have expanded their investigation committee to include technical and medical experts. The panel is expected to submit its findings by June 3.
Officials described the deaths as a national tragedy and said those responsible will be held accountable once the investigation is complete.
