Bangladesh must press army chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman to discipline those behind journalist detentions

Army Chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman must be urged to discipline those involved in the recent detention of Bangladesh Times journalists.

In a functioning democracy, acts of coercion against press freedom are unacceptable and undermine public trust. Such actions risk eroding the rule of law and setting a dangerous precedent for how democratic institutions handle free expression.

The army’s role should be to protect citizens, not suppress their right to report on matters of public concern.

Immediate disciplinary measures are required to ensure this never happens again in Bangladesh’s fragile democratic process.
