Bangladesh approved the allocation of about 850 acres in Mirsarai for a new Defence Industrial Zone intended to expand domestic military production and attract global defence manufacturing investment. The decision was made Monday at a governing board meeting of the Bangladesh Economic Zones Authority (BEZA) chaired by chief adviser Mohammad Yunus.
BEZA executive chairman Ashik Chowdhury said the land had previously been designated for an Indian Economic Zone before that project was cancelled in June last year. He said the initiative is aimed at technology transfer, joint ventures and supplier agreements with foreign partners rather than replicating state-run Bangladesh Ordnance Factories.
Officials said development will proceed gradually, with only a small portion used in the first five years.
