At least six Bangladeshi peacekeepers were killed and eight others injured in an attack on a United Nations base in Sudan, the Bangladesh Army said Saturday.
In a statement, the Inter-Services Public Relations said the attack took place in Abyei, a disputed area between Sudan and South Sudan, adding that the security situation remained unstable.
AFP reported that witnesses said a drone struck the United Nations compound in Kadugli.
“Six people were killed in a bombing of the UN headquarters while they were inside the building,” a medical source told the news agency.
“I am deeply saddened by the news that six of our brave peacekeepers have embraced martyrdom,” said Muhammad Yunus, de facto prime minister of the interim Bangladesh government, condemning the attack.
Bangladesh said it is coordinating with the United Nations to repatriate the bodies and treat the injured. Sudan’s army-aligned government blamed the Rapid Support Forces.
