Bangladesh households are relocating as erosion accelerates. New research shows climate pressures reshaping mobility.

Research findings released by the Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies found that river erosion has become a major driver of full household migration in coastal areas of Bangladesh, accounting for 27.41 percent of relocations.

The study, based on 403 households, reported 74 full and 77 partial migrations linked to erosion, compared with floods that caused 40.8 percent of partial movements. Researchers said families often stayed at destination sites due to housing loss or support from non-governmental organizations.

At the Annual BIDS Conference on Development 2025, additional papers showed the haor, a backswamp, region remains highly vulnerable to repeated climatic shocks and that adoption of stress-tolerant rice varieties is uneven across districts.

Another study noted that Bangladesh still has low access to clean cooking fuel despite rapid growth in liquefied petroleum gas use.
