A 4.1-magnitude earthquake struck Dhaka and nearby districts at 6:14 a.m. on Thursday, according to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department.
Officials said the epicentre was in Shibpur of Narsingdi district, about 38 kilometres from the capital. The European Mediterranean Seismological Centre reported that the quake struck 33 kilometres east northeast of Tongi and three kilometres north of Narsingdi at a depth of 30 kilometres.
The tremor follows a series of recent earthquakes across Bangladesh. Early on December 1, a 4.9-magnitude quake centered in Minjin, Myanmar shook Chattogram and several other regions. Dhaka also experienced a 3.6-magnitude tremor on November 27, with earlier quakes that day recorded in Sylhet and Teknaf.
On November 21, a 5.7-magnitude quake near Madhabdi in Narsingdi killed 10 people and injured more than 600.
