Bangladesh has proposed importing an additional 20 megawatts of hydropower from Nepal, expanding on its existing purchase of 40 megawatts during the June to November period, a senior official said Friday.
Farzana Mamtaz, secretary of the Power Division of the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources, said Nepal signaled it could supply the extra electricity. She spoke after the Nepal Bangladesh Joint Steering Committee on Energy met in Dhaka on Thursday.
Bangladesh began importing hydropower from Nepal in June after India endorsed the plan and allowed use of its transmission line.
Mamtaz said the additional imports are technically feasible through the same route but would again require India’s concurrence. Officials from both countries also discussed renewable energy, efficiency and training cooperation.
