Rival Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) groups fight over nomination in Delduar

At least 10 people were injured on Saturday when supporters of two rival Bangladesh Nationalist Party factions clashed in Delduar upazila of Tangail, according to police and locals.

The confrontation broke out between backers of Bangladesh Nationalist Party-nominated candidate Rabiul Awal Lavlu and supporters of Jewel Sarkar, who was denied the party nomination and serves as president of the Jatiyatabadi Projonmo Dal’s executive committee.

Md Shoaib Khan, officer-in-charge of Delduar Police Station, said Sarkar’s supporters formed a human chain at Elasin Bazar before marching in protest to demand the cancellation of Lavlu’s nomination.

Supporters of Lavlu then arrived with a procession, leading to a chase and counter-chase that escalated into a clash.

Police who were already deployed brought the situation under control.

No complaints were filed.
