Officials from the Central Intelligence Cell of the National Board of Revenue opened two vaults at Agrani Bank’s Motijheel branch registered to former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and recovered 832.51 bhori of gold, equal to about 9.72 kilograms.
At current U.S. spot-gold rates, the haul is worth roughly $1.31 million. Investigators also found state awards and foreign gifts that legally should have been turned into the state treasury.
Gold was in the form of ornaments.
A separate vault at Pubali Bank, also registered in Hasina’s name, was empty.
The recoveries come amid intensified scrutiny of political figures’ financial assets. The Anti-Corruption Commission is expected to hold a briefing on the case soon.
Hasina is hiding in India as a fugitive. She is wanted by the Bangladesh government. She was convicted and sentenced to death earlier in the month.
