Bangladesh’s internet freedom improved to 45 out of 100 in Freedom House’s 2025 Freedom on the Net report, marking a five-point rise and the largest gain among 72 countries assessed.
The report credits regulatory changes under the interim government, including efforts by Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission chair Muhammad Emdad-Ul-Bari to curb shutdowns and frame internet access as a human right.
The repeal of the Cyber Security Act and its replacement with the Cyber Security Ordinance added safeguards, though concerns remain over content removal and broad “cyber terrorism” rules.
Freedom House also noted political restrictions, including bans on Awami League activity and limits on disseminating former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s speeches. Bangladesh remains “partly free.”
