Bangladesh man arrested in Cumilla after 50 Bakul trees cut along Dhaka–Chattogram highway

Police have arrested a man accused of cutting down about 50 Bakul trees planted on the divider of the Dhaka–Chattogram highway in Cumilla’s Sadar Dakshin upazila.

Md Azmir Hossain, 37, was detained Thursday night in the Beltoli area after the Roads and Highways Department filed a case, said Mohammad Selim, officer-in-charge of the Sadar Dakshin Model Police Station.

Azmir, who runs a tea stall near Beltoli 100-Bed Children’s Hospital, previously told The Daily Star the trees were “of no use” and were felled during soil work, with locals cutting others.

RHD officials said the nine-year-old Bakul trees were part of a highway beautification project and will be replaced.
