Bangladesh advances $550 million port expansion with Laldia terminal signing

The Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) is set to sign a 30-year concession agreement Monday with APM Terminals BV to design, finance, build and operate the Laldia Container Terminal under a public-private partnership (PPP).

The ceremony will be held at the Intercontinental Hotel with senior Bangladeshi and Danish officials in attendance. Ashik Chowdhury, executive chairman of the Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA), said the agreement marks a major shift for the sector.

“This groundbreaking move is anticipated to bring about a revolutionary change in Bangladesh’s port sector. This will reduce the capital expenditure burden for Bangladesh government,” said Chowdhury.

The project is expected to draw about $550 million in foreign investment, add more than 800,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) a year and begin operations in 2030.
