Indian authorities are investigating an explosion near the historic Red Fort in New Delhi that killed at least eight people and injured others Monday evening, treating it as a possible terrorist attack.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, “I assure everyone that our investigative agencies will get to the bottom of this conspiracy. Whoever is responsible for this will not be spared at any cost.” Home Minister Amit Shah said investigators are pursuing “all angles” as police filed a case under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, India’s anti-terror law.
The blast occurred near a subway station during rush hour, making it the deadliest attack in the capital since a 2011 courthouse bombing. Police said the explosion came hours after they dismantled what they described as an “interstate and transnational terror module” linked to Jaish-e-Mohammed, a Pakistan-based militant group accused of past attacks in India.
Authorities have also heightened security citywide as forensic teams analyze materials recovered from the scene. Witnesses described the explosion as “earthshaking,” followed by smaller blasts in nearby vehicles.
