A man was shot dead and another critically injured early Sunday in a clash between two rival factions of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) in Mollakandi Union under Munshiganj district, police said.
The deceased was identified as Arif Mir, 35, while his cousin Imran was wounded and later transferred from Munshiganj General Hospital to Dhaka Medical College Hospital in critical condition.
According to Saiful Alam, officer-in-charge of Munshiganj Sadar Police Station, police have been deployed to prevent further violence. “The situation is tense but under control,” he said.
Witnesses said the clash stemmed from a longstanding rivalry between groups loyal to former union BNP vice-president Awlad Hossain and union BNP president Ohid Mollah, a follower of district BNP convening committee member Atik Mallik.
Around 6 a.m., Arif and Imran were ambushed and shot outside their home in Chardumuria village, allegedly by men led by Shah Kamal, an associate of Ohid Mollah.
Dr. Ruhul Amin of Munshiganj General Hospital said Arif was dead on arrival, while Imran received initial treatment before being moved to Dhaka.
A day earlier, Tanzil Ahmed, 30, a Chhatra Dal activist affiliated with the BNP, died after falling ill amid factional clashes in Mymensingh city, officials said.
