At least 18 people were injured and one man died of a suspected heart attack as clashes erupted among rival Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) factions over election nominations across several districts, police said Sunday.
In Mymensingh’s Gouripur, a supporter of BNP candidate M Iqbal Hossain collapsed and died during a confrontation with backers of Tyabur Rahaman Hiron. Police said there were no injury marks on his body.
In Cumilla’s Laksham, 10 people were injured, including Samira Azim Dola, daughter of former lawmaker Anwarul Azim.
Tensions also flared in Madaripur, Brahmanbaria, Gaibandha, Cox’s Bazar, and Chapainawabganj as rival groups protested candidate selections, prompting police to impose restrictions on gatherings in some areas.
