Silence from Washington over Shahidul Alam’s detention fuels debate on U.S. complicity in Israeli policy

Bangladeshi photographer and activist Shahidul Alam, a global voice for truth and human rights, now sits in Israeli custody after being seized from an aid flotilla bound for Gaza. His only “crime” was documenting a humanitarian mission. The silence from Washington, the closest ally and chief satellite partner of Israel, is unacceptable.

Alam’s detention is not just a Bangladeshi concern. It is a test of the principles Americans claim to uphold: freedom of expression, human rights, and the protection of civilians. For decades, U.S. support has enabled Israel’s military actions, including its naval blockade of Gaza. With that support comes responsibility.

If Washington truly values press freedom, it must demand Alam’s immediate release. The United States has immense diplomatic leverage over Israel through aid, intelligence sharing, and satellite coordination. It should use every instrument of influence to ensure that a peaceful activist and journalist is not punished for bearing witness.

Americans cannot claim moral leadership while ignoring the plight of a man detained for his conscience. Free Shahidul Alam now.
